Scientists Create Fish With Leg

Genetic researchers have been working for a long time to reproduce the mysterious evolutionary step that grew legs on fish. This change eventually moved life from water to land, resulting in a explosion of walking species that took over the Earth’s land and skies more than 300 million years ago.

Now, they have achieved it. They have grown legs on fish.

The key of this change is called HOXD13, part of a gene cluster that encodes the instructions that are responsible for morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. In other words: these genes control our body structure, from the number and shape of fingers on your hands to the shape of your legs. When these genes are damaged, they result in serious limb abnormalities.

On the other hand, it seems that overexpressing this gene can result in the growth of limbs. In a paper published in the scientific journal Developmental Cell, a team of genetic researchers from the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, Spain, have discovered that HOXD13 can also be used to transform fins into limbs in zebra fishes:

In other words, by manipulating this gene they were able to grow legs on zebra fishes that resemble those in tetrapods, the superclass of animals that include all living and extinct amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. In fact, the round shapes look like those of lobe-finned fish, which are the precursors of amphibians.

The History of Valentine’s Day

Love has many different meanings in every single language but there is a universal traditional day when people express their inner feelings for each other, either love or friendship. Valentine’s Day was coined as the exchange day for those with these naturally feelings for others, throughout all cultures.

The origins of Valentine’s day are traced back to the Medieval era associated with the Catholic Church feast day, but love and fertility nexus with this particular date falling on February 14 comes from the ancient times of Greece, when the Athens calendar included a period between mid January and mid February called the Gamelion, a month dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera, hence associated with love and fertility.

Lupercalia, the festival of Lupercus, the God of Fertility, was the equivalent in the Roman Empire and taking place on February 15, time of purification rituals. There is no written reference about how Saint Valentine became the romantic love protector, in fact the Catholic martyrologies mention three different Saint Valentines under the date of February 14; a priest in Rome, a bishop of Interamna, and a martyr in the Roman province of Africa, making even more obscure the origins of this celebration.

Dozens of water-skiers have set a new world record after 145 people were pulled behind a single boat.Some 154 skiers from around the world gathered in Macquarie Harbour in Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania for the record attempt.
The skiers needed to stay upright for a full nautical mile in order to qualify for the record books.But even though nine unlucky participants were unable to last the distance, the 145 who did manage to remain on their skis easily beat the previous record of 114.That world record was set by the same team in the same place two years ago.
Organisers modified the 114ft-long World Heritage Cruises catamaran Eagle in order for it to drag the small army of water enthusiasts behind it.
The 3,000 horsepower craft was fitted with different propellers and a 308ft-long aluminium boom to prevent the skiers’ ropes from tangling.The youngest entrant, Alexandria Seaton, was just 12 years old.
Perfect weather conditions last Friday helped the record breakers achieve their objective.The record is expected to be confirmed by Guinness World Records officials, who witnessed the event, in the coming weeks.
